Glasgow's Best Burrito - The Finale - The Burrito Bandito

Well, mi hermanos, here we are: just over a month ago when I set out on an epic quest to uncover Glasgow’s best burrito, I did not know the awesome scale of the trek I was about to embark upon. I thought I knew burritos: how they were supposed to be, what separated the weak from the mighty, what elements contributed to the creation of a truly exceptional burrito – I could not have been farther from the truth. From the first bite of the first burrito, I knew I was in for a gargantuan task. So many differentials, so many flavours, so many unique styles: it would take all of me to persevere and fulfil this destiny I had burdened upon myself. My journey took me within the tranquility of many strongholds, beyond those reviewed in my blog: taco bell, for example, did not make the cut. Perhaps if I regurgitated a legitimate burrito, wrapped the churned-up pulp within a tortilla, and served it, it may have tasted better than the disgraceful example I was plagued with in that dismal estab...

TOPOLABAMBA Review - "Bastion of Burrito Brilliance" - Glasgow's Best Burrito

Image
You can stop rubbing your eyes in disbelief: this really is the second burrito review in a week. My quest for Glasgow’s best burrito has gathered blistering pace, and after much searching, I have found a fourth foe with which to do battle – Topolabamba, on St Vincent Street. A stalwart of the Glasgow food scene since its inception 4 years ago, Topolabamba has established itself as a bastion of burrito brilliance, serving up “authentic Mexican street food” in a “casual but not too casual atmosphere”.   Its success on the west coast has allowed two further branches to be opened, one in our fair capital, and the other in Aberdeen. A now nationally recognised symbol of great Mexican food, Topolabamba is the perfect place to forage further for Glasgow’s best burrito. Vamos! Presentation The exterior of Topolabamba has somewhat become a part of Glaswegian lore: the purposeful flicker of the ‘bam’ portion of the signage encourages passers-by – or is it actually broken? – to ha...

LAS IGUANAS Review - "Burning Burrito-based Blitz" - Glasgow's Best Burrito

Image
Fear not, mi hermanos, for I have returned. Following a 2-week long siesta filled with procrastination and binge-watching Power, my never satisfied desire for burrito magnificence has once again surfaced, and it is time for my quest to continue. So, without further ado, lets get down to business! Vamos! This time my call of duty resonated from Las Iguanas on West Nile Street. A very nicely presented and more wine and dine affair than  Barburrito or Taco Mazama , Las Iguanas is home to a broad spectrum of South American cuisine made with British produce. Their food supposedly “pulses with its exotic 16 th Century roots” and provides “the warmth and welcome of South America”. They strive to bring a sliver of Latin America to the streets of Britain. Some death-or-glory, devil-may-care promises to make when yours truly is in town. You know what time it is. To the burrito! Presentation As you approach the restaurant, you are met by a vivid and impressive exterior: A ...

TACO MAZAMA Review - "VIP Guacamole" - Glasgow's Best Burrito

Image
Seconds out. Time for round two. This time around the opponent we face is Taco Mazama, within its Hope Street branch. A relatively new venture, Taco Mazama serves an exclusively Scottish market, with three branches in Glasgow and also three in Edinburgh. With a humble mission statement of believing in providing fresh and tasty Mexican street food to the hungry public, they "promise to provide quality, delicious, and healthy Mexican street food time and time again" - some fearless, noble, and some may say reckless claims to make considering how high the stakes. They talk the talk, lets see if they can walk the walk. A restaurant which takes such pride in its burrito craftsmanship must be put to the test. Could they be worthy of the title of Glasgow's Best Burrito. Time to find out. Vamos! Presentation The exterior of the restaurant is more 'meat and potatoes' than others - "Taco Mazama, Mexican Street Food" - it does what it says on the tin. No chee...

BARBURRITO Review - "A Savoury War Zone" - Glasgow's Best Burrito

Image
The first call of duty on my burrito-laden quest was BARBURRITO, specifically the Queen Street branch, just opposite the Gallery of Modern Art. After some reconnaissance via their website, I discovered BARBURRITO holds the claim of being the UK's first "Burrito Bar", having opened the doors to its first restaurant in Manchester's Piccadilly Gardens, back in 2005. They also boast to be "ahead of the curve, burrito-wise" and crown themselves "revolutionaries" in the burrito field. Finally, the bold and audacious sentence; "we like to think we've perfected the art of burrito making". I will be the judge of that mi hermanos. Presentation The exterior of the restaurant is inviting: windows aplenty with stereotypical symbols of Mexico dangling from every crevice - exotic plants, exposed wood, bright colours. There is also a neon sign to greet us in Spanish: "Hola Glasgow!". Adorable. The interior was much the same story, with...
